Accidents, biggest killers. More education needed

“Let’s make everyone understand that rules are there to protect lives, not to limit freedom”.

With this appeal, the Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, opened an intensive and awareness campaign for citizens, drivers and pedestrians alike, who do not respect traffic laws and put their lives in danger.

The Minister says that more lives are lost by accidents than by any other thinig.

“We have more deaths from accidents than crimes also because of the lack of education on traffic rules. This goes for drivers and pedestrians too, and it is mainly due to the lack of capacities in institutions for enforcing rules. We want to do things in parallel, enforce rules and make sure they are respected through sanctions. Awareness is one other method”, Tahiri says.

Compared to 2013, there have been 150 less accidents reported. Despite the statistics, drunk driving and excessive speed remains a concern.

A few days ago, the Head of the Traffic Police, Besmir Qibini, declared that the police must start awareness campaigns targeted to citizens.

School students were present in the opening of this campaign, who have been active with the traffic police to raise awareness among citizens for basic traffic rules.
