British company “Crown Agents”, accused by the opposition for failure and corruption in handling Albanian customs, says the results achieved are a success story. The company declares that in the first half of the year it managed positive results in two directions: stopping smuggling and increasing revenues, and also fighting corruption inside the customs own staff.

“Crown Agents” said it has made 4900 on field inspections during January-June period, uncovering 1370 violations or tax evasion cases. This way, they managed to increase by 6.4 million euros customs revenues, a figure expected to go up to 11 million after some appealed cases are heard by the court.

While fighting against cigarettes and alcohol smugglers, “Crown Agents” insists it has assisted authorities in tackling corruption inside the institution’s system, something that led to the resignation or dismissal of some 80 officials with corruption charges, but did not give any more details about their identities or ranks in the custom office.
