The US Chamber of Commerce is reminding the government that although
they support the operation against informality, repressive measures are
not the only way to fight it. In an interview for Top Channel, the
President of this Chamber, Mark Crawford, says that the government
should be less harsh with business.

“You cannot collect water with your punches, but slower, with a bucket. Maybe a softer operation might be more welcome, but we will see the result”, Crawford says.

According to him, if authorities will focus on force only, this might bring an unwanted result.

The operation against informality on terrain has been accompanied with harsher punitive measures. Crawford says some of them might be counterproductive and will affect the economy.

“If banks feel they can go to prison if they give loans, if they give loans to a company with two balances… if the government is very harsh with fines, then it could hamper investment and money circulation”, he continued.

The US Chamber was one of the first business organization that listed high evastion as one of the biggest problems in the economy. Crawford says the Chamber keeps supporting the fight against informality, but the government should be careful not hitting the economy.
