New port concession, Lati: “Government did not notify us”

The competition authority declared that the government has violated the
law by avoiding the Competition Authority for the new fuel port in Porto
Romano. Diretor Lindita Lati said the Authority was not notified for
the concession, but they learned about it after the agreement was
sealed.
The government and any public institution is bound by law to receive the official evaluation of the authiruty before transferring exclusive concessions. The obligation was set in 2010, based on EU directives, to avoid market deformation and prevent corruption.
The government approved the construction of a new port in Porto Romano, which will receive ships with more than 20.000 tons of capacity.
After 2010, Albania has given a series of public services to private concessionaries, which have often generated strong debates.
